Fencing alongside public footpath requires repair

Reported anonymously at 10:14, Thu 5 September 2019

There is a graveyard a little way up the hill which is approached via a public footpath leading from the main road by the traffic chicane. From the chicane there are two pathways one leading down to the graveyard and the other to the river; an upper one and a lower one. Both pathways are fenced on one side by posts and wooden rails. The upper fencing is intact but the lower one has rails missing. These rails are necessary to prevent people falling from the path off the bridge and into the river that runs below. The absence of a whole section of rails presents a serious risk to users of this footpath. The condition of certain trees alongside the path was such that warranted monitoring. The PCC have sited warning signs in the area in an attempt to warn the public to be aware of falling branches. By the bridge one bough has fallen from a conifer into the river. There is also a tree to which a rope is attached and used by local children to swing across the river. As this activity is popular with children it has been pointed out that the visually poor condition of this bough could pose a health and safety risk. The owners of the land are Burghley Estates, and it will be helpful if you could make them aware of their responsibilities regarding the maintenance of these trees and the safety of the public using the public footpath through their land.
