There is significant risk of injury to pedestrians with the current arrangement of market stalls.
The fishmonger and the flower stall both set up very close to main road causing pedestrians to walk out in the road to pass one another (see photos attached).
This is particularly noticeable when oncoming pedestrians meet as one group is invariably forced out into the road. The fishmonger has only allowed 70 cm gap to pass. In addition, the flower selling places shrubs on the line of the road which forces people to stay out in the road even longer. This further encourages pedestrians not to use existing footpaths either side. On one side they continue across the loading area to get to the crossing and at the other the walk across or around the taxi rank.
Under Covid-19 restrictions the footpath should be sufficiently wide to allow two oncoming groups to pass with 2m gap and at the moment this isn't acceptable across the front of the market.
The town has implemented a series of social distancing measures on the market square and in Mill Street over the past few weeks. Could I suggest that market starts on the new white line (see photo attached). This will give safe walkway across the face on the market and a direct line between existing pavements on either side of the street. I noticed last Saturday that the market has been extended across the front of the old Post Office so that there ample room to accommodate this change.
This would deliver improved safety to pedestrians and better Covid-19 protection for towns people.
