Disintegrating road/verge

Reported via desktop in the Roads and Highways category anonymously at 14:58, Thu 26 November 2020

Sent to Rutland County Council 6 hours, 6 minutes later

I have been informed today of a very dangerous stretch of road between Clipsham village and Yew Tree Avenue where the shoulder of the carriageway has disintegrated leaving a drop of some 12 inches onto soft mud on the verge. Apparently, very recently a car coming towards Clipsham moved over to avoid a large oncoming vehicle and went off the road, stripping the tyre from the wheel. I understand that this has happened twice recently.

I went to look at the spot myself and it is indeed most dangerous and would cause serious damage to a vehicle running off the carriageway on the nearside along this stretch of road, travelling towards Clipsham from Yew Tree Avenue. The danger is undoubtedly caused by HGV's using this stretch of road. I would imagine, that if a motorist experienced coming off the road at this point there could be litigation involved on grounds of highways safety.

Would it be possible for you, together with a responsible highways officer to come and have a look at this with me to judge the situation for yourselves.? I will make myself available to take you to the site. A serious accident could arise here at any time.
