Cutting down 26 old trees

Reported via desktop in the Trees or Vegetation category anonymously at 15:30, Sun 21 July 2024

Sent to Rutland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6256629.

The trees along Brooke road are vital for oakham depleting wild life. There are many options for improving road flow that have been ignored as it’s “easier” to uproot old trees. I quote from Rutland County Councils SHELAA OAK04; New development could provide an opportunity to create a more positive, softer edge to the town in this location and to increase wildlife / ecological / nature recovery / green infrastructure networks.

How can covering a greenfield site, home to hares, deer, bats and other wildlife, in housing achieve this objective.? It would in fact do exactly the opposite.

Many have suggested the new estate to have extra parking for Brooke road residents so that removing the parking bays will create a two way road without having to cut down the trees. Further more RCC had previously stated they would compensate by replanting trees else where, since then they have backed out of this. Additionally, whilst replacing trees would help, it takes 5-10 years for a tree to mature, the old trees along Brooke road are going to be many, if not hundreds of years more efficient in absorbing carbon dioxide, not to mention the aesthetics and environmental benefits that’s trees provide including reducing the impact and likelihood of flooding. Destroying 26 trees to build 140 new houses in a town whose schools and GP is already over subscribed is ridiculous. Put the new developments off the BY PASS where there is room without destroying Oakham old town anymore.
